The Mine – a Witness to History and Technological Monument

 I. The subject matter

The issue of revalorization of technological monuments and old mines that have been or are being closed as well as of change of their function is relatively new. It is highly important to consider how these old, closed mines and industrial plants together with their whole technological infrastructure can be used to create economic development opportunities through the expansion of tourism, recreation, balneology, and didactics.
The specialists who deal with underground and ground monuments across various industries have for many years insisted on integration and exchange of views. The Mine - a Witness to History and Technological Monument session is an interdisciplinary forum with a broad range of issues where participants can acquaint themselves with and discuss the present condition and the development prospects of underground historic monuments and interesting technological monuments. We hope it can become an opportunity to exchange opinions and reflections, to have vivid discussions, to make new friends and cement the existing friendships.
We also hope that the session can become another step towards the integration of all specialists in the broad field of underground monuments.

Addressing this Session to everyone, who is interested in the traditions of mining and conservation of material heritage of mining culture, we will lay particular emphasis on the following issues:

  • mining in the process of technological and cultural transformations
  • industrial archaeology - the rudiments of methodology
  • active preservation of material testimony of mining heritage
